Rising damp happens when ground moisture travels up through the wall because the damp-proof course has broken down or is missing. The classic signs are a tide mark up to about a metre off the floor, blown or crumbling plaster, white salt deposits and skirting boards that feel damp or start to rot.
We confirm it is genuinely rising damp with a survey first, because condensation and penetrating damp can look similar and need completely different work. If it is rising damp, we inject a new chemical damp-proof course into the wall to form a barrier, then hack off the contaminated plaster and replaster with a salt-resistant render. That combination stops the moisture rising and stops the old salts spoiling your new finish.
