Damp proofing

A dry basement you can actually use

Cellars and basements sit below ground, so water in the surrounding soil is constantly pressing against the walls and floor. Without waterproofing that moisture comes straight through, which is why so many basements smell musty and cannot be used for anything that matters.

Tanking solves this by creating a waterproof barrier. Depending on the room we either apply a cementitious tanking slurry directly to the walls and floor, or fit a cavity drain membrane that channels any water away to a drainage point. We survey the space, explain which system suits it and provide you with a written quote. Done properly, tanking turns a damp cellar into dry, useful space you can convert or live in.

What the work covers

Every quote varies depending on the property and what the job needs, but here is what a typical basement tanking job with us covers from start to finish.

  • A survey of the below-ground walls and floor
  • Cementitious tanking or cavity drain membrane
  • Drainage and sump provision where required
  • Preparation of walls ready for finishing
  • Advice on converting the space

How we do it

The typical process

  1. Step 01

    Survey

We assess the water pressure, condition and how you want to use the room.

  2. Step 02

    Choose the system

We recommend tanking slurry or a cavity drain membrane to suit the basement.

  3. Step 03

    Prepare and apply

Surfaces are prepared and the waterproofing system is installed.

  4. Step 04

    Ready to finish

The room is left dry and prepared for you to decorate or convert.

The quote

Basement Tanking costs

Every property is different, so we quote each job on its own after a free survey rather than off a description. These are the things that move the figure, and we set it all out in writing before any work starts. The visit is free.

  • The size of the basement or cellar
  • Whether tanking slurry or a membrane system is used
  • Whether drainage and a sump pump are needed
  • The condition of the existing walls and floor

Common questions

Basement Tanking questions

Can any cellar be tanked?

Almost always, but the right system depends on how much water is present and how you want to use the room. The survey tells us which approach will keep it reliably dry.

Can I convert the basement into a room afterwards?

Yes. Tanking is the step that makes a basement conversion possible, because it provides you with a dry, sound surface to build the finished room onto.

Will a tanked basement need a pump?

A cavity drain membrane system usually drains to a sump and pump; a slurry system may not. We explain what your basement needs when we quote.

How long does basement waterproofing take?

It depends on the size of the room and the system used, but most domestic basements are done within a few days to a week. We provide you with a timescale with the quote.

Is the waterproofing guaranteed?

Yes. We stand behind the system we install and explain the guarantee and any maintenance, such as a sump pump service, when we quote.
